Kumasi Sanitation Solutions, winner of the 2021 Global Mayors Challenge for its innovative response to the sanitation crisis in the Moshie Zongo neighborhood of Kumasi, Ghana, trains unemployed youth to build low-cost, sustainable toilets for households lacking safe, affordable, and accessible sanitation. By integrating bio-digesters and other technologies with the city’s infrastructure, the program converts waste into organic manure for local farms while providing professional and economic opportunities for youth artisans.
OCI’s global team of evaluators and subject matter experts in public health and water, sanitation, and hygiene is assessing the initiative using a mixed-methods approach—including household surveys, observations, key informant interviews, and stories of change—to measure its impact on residents’ privacy, dignity, and safety (with particular attention to women and girls), neighborhood cleanliness and hygiene practices, and youth employment. The evaluation also examines the program’s sustainability and its potential for replication in other communities.
